Our Sustainability Activities

As a modern producers' cooperative, we are aware of our responsibility to future generations. Sustainability is a core value for us and is firmly embedded in our company vision. Our goal is to meet the harmony of economic, ecological, and social responsibility today and in the future.

The planning and coordination of our initiatives are managed by the sustainability management team, which collaborates with the sustainability team composed of sustainability officers from various business areas and the management. Additionally, all employees at ELO undergo sustainability training that provides knowledge on current topics in this field.

In our work, we align with the ZNU Standard for Sustainable Business and successfully completed our first certification audit in this framework in 2024.

Measurable Sustainability

To accurately track progress in implementing our sustainability program, we measure our achievements. We define project goals, specific actions, and key performance indicators (KPIs) to create transparency in our journey toward achieving these objectives. The KPIs encompass economic, ecological, social, and ethical criteria.

Ecological

Climate and Environment

We aim not only to grow and sell the best fruits and vegetables but also to minimize the impact on the climate and environment as much as possible. This begins with sustainable soil management and extends to the use of green electricity.

Our goal: Currently (2024), we are developing a climate protection strategy for Scope 1 and 2 in alignment with the 1.5-degree target based on the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). In this strategy, we will set specific goals and support them with actions and key performance indicators for a scientifically grounded emission reduction.

The less waste, the better.

Waste is a huge problem for the environment, and we are doing everything we can to prevent its generation. Therefore, waste separation in our facilities has long been standard practice for us. Naturally, we will continue to work diligently in the future to reduce our waste and residual waste rates.

Our goal: We aim to reduce our residual waste rate by 20 percent by 2027.

Economic

We focus on quality.

We place great importance on the quality and safety of our products. Production follows QS / GLOBALG.A.P. guidelines and is maintained through an intensive quality management system (QS, IFS, Organic, Regional Window). Regular independent checks by the Lower Saxony Chamber of Agriculture (Horticulture) confirm the excellent quality of our products. We continuously develop our quality management practices. Additionally, we prioritize honest communication with our customers and business partners.

Our goal: To further reduce the average complaint rate by 10% by 2027.

Sustainably Satisfied Employees

We are firmly rooted in the region and position ourselves as a reliable and attractive employer.

Flexible Work Models & Modern Workspaces
Even within the context of a seasonal business, work-life balance and family-friendliness are important values for ELO. For example, all office workstations at ELO are equipped with height-adjustable desks, and the opportunity to work remotely is actively encouraged.

On-Site Catering
A balanced diet is essential for well-being. Therefore, we offer healthy meals at discounted prices, free coffee, and fruit. Additionally, our cafeteria features a water dispenser that provides refreshing hydration at any time.

Company Fitness & E-Bike Leasing
In addition to the opportunity to participate in various health programs, sports activities, or stress management courses through EGYM Wellpass at participating fitness and wellness facilities, employees can also lease an e-bike through our leasing partner.

Team Building & Events
To promote cohesion at ELO and foster a positive corporate culture, various events are held annually, such as a May bike tour and a Christmas party.

Vacation Pay, Savings Plans & Company Pension Scheme
All permanent employees receive vacation pay of equal amounts in July. We provide asset-building benefits and enable all permanent employees to sign up for a company pension plan after completing their probation period.

To understand the needs and concerns of our employees, we will conduct regular employee satisfaction surveys starting in 2024. These surveys will be based on our cultural measurement conducted in 2023 and the company values derived from it.

Our Goal: In 2023, we achieved an employee satisfaction score of 4.5*. Given the progress made since then, we aim to reach an average satisfaction score of 2* by 2025. The measures already implemented provide a promising foundation upon which we will continue to build to steadily increase our employees' satisfaction.

*6-point scale from 1: very satisfied to 6: completely dissatisfied.

We Are Committed to the Region

It is important to us to engage socially in our community. Therefore, we regularly donate to regional organizations and projects, and we will continue to make an active contribution to supporting and promoting our region.
